Family Resemblance and Measures of Central Tendency in an M-dimensional Space as Determinants of Typicality in Categories

چکیده
Three possible determinants of typicality were examined in categories of common household objects: family resemblance and an exemplar’s similarity to a geometrical centroid of the category, either unweighted or weighted for name frequencies. Similarity to the geometrical centroids in 2to 6-dimensional spaces outperformed family resemblance in predicting typicality. Finally, optimizing the prediction of typicality in an M -dimensional space resulted in an abstract representation far outside the set of objects, suggesting that people seem to use a caricature to judge typicality. The position of this external prototype was most influenced by the typicality of non-

Three possible determinants of graded structure (typicality) were observed in common taxonomic categories and goal-derived categories: (1) an exemplar's similarity to ideals associated with goals its category serves; (2) an exemplar's similarity to the central tendency of its category (family resemblance); and (3) an exemplar's frequency of instantiation (people's subjective estimates of how of...
متن کاملFrom prototypes to caricatures: Geometrical models for concept typicality
In three studies, we investigated to what extent a geometrical representation in a psychological space succeeds in predicting typicality in animal, natural food and artifact concepts and whether contrast categories contribute to the prediction. In Study 1, we compared the predictive value of a family resemblance-based prototype model with a geometrical centroid model in which similarity is defi...
متن کاملAn extension theorem for finite positive measures on surfaces of finite dimensional unit balls in Hilbert spaces
A consistency criteria is given for a certain class of finite positive measures on the surfaces of the finite dimensional unit balls in a real separable Hilbert space. It is proved, through a Kolmogorov type existence theorem, that the class induces a unique positive measure on the surface of the unit ball in the Hilbert space. As an application, this will naturally accomplish the work of Kante...
متن کاملCues to perceived functions of acted and spontaneous feedback expressions
We present a two step study where the first part aims to determine the phonemic prior bias (conditioned on “ah”, “m-hm”, “m-m”, “n-hn”, “oh”, “okay”, “u-hu”, “yeah” and “yes”) in subjects perception of six feedback functions (acknowledgment, continuer, disagreement, surprise, enthusiasm and uncertainty). The results showed a clear phonemic prior bias for some tokens, e.g “ah” and “oh” is common...
متن کاملWHAT IS TYPICAL IN INDUCTION? 1 Running head: WHAT IS TYPICAL IN INDUCTION? What is Typical About the Typicality Effect in Category-based Induction? In press at Memory & Cognition
Research on category-based induction has documented a consistent typicality effect: typical exemplars promote stronger inferences about their broader category than atypical exemplars. This work has been largely confined to categories whose central tendencies are also the most typical members of the category. Does the typicality effect apply to the broad set of categories for which the ideal cat...
